hi Erik
Excellent post!

having owned these computers for a long time my comments follow those of the
repair expert from Sweden

live all of my plastic Novags i never had a problem with any
only one Novag is bad..the Scorpio
of course we do not count the Savants

oddly i never had an LED go out in any of my Fidelities
however in the wooden boards i am starting to see Reed switch problems
but we are now getting past 20 years for some of these

>Saitek Turbostar: Some problems early because of bad mechanic solutions.

dont own it but for Similar Scisys/Saiteks the defect i usually see is entire
rank or files go dead not recognizing the pieces
never only one square but an entire rank or file

probably the most poorly made chess computers ever made
certainly the wooden Ambassador and Monarch are built like dog meat
the plastic Escorter is ok

the defects of the wooden boards are so numerous there are not enough keys on my
keyboard to describe it

just to name a few:
sound malfunctions
leds go out
reed switches
modules stop working
the wood itself starts to warp and become loose
buttons sink under the board
