I am currently in the program of writing an advanced move generator, and I can attest to the fact that to have a breakdown of the total numbers by move is really essential to quickly trace down the bugs. My perft(6) from the initial position was 24 off out of a 119 million, all less deep perfts being OK. I would never have found the bug if I could not have been able to identify the branch that was off, and then zooming in by looking at the perft(5) from the position after that moove, etc.
