The ruy lopez exchange....the goal is to render black a weakened pawn majority on the queenside...while white tries to create a passed pawn on the king side. Usually white strives to exchange as many pieces possible and head for a favorable endgame. Black should try to prevent this: keep as much pieces possible and avoid an unfavorable transition to an endgame, and hopefully make use of the two bishops in an open position. I think a good example can be found in Fischer's book" My Sixty Memorable Games"...and look for the game Fischer-Gligoric. i think fischer made a real good job annotating the game. It should give anyone a good understanding of the opening.
