To those seeking improvment through chess software or chess books, here is a couple of ideas (of course there are many more), that you can try... Study, study and then, study some more. Chess has such a rich history, and because of that syphistication in accumuted chess knowledge, it is a fairly easy game to learn, but an incredibly difficult game to master. I recommend using all of the chess software you can acccumulate. But also get as many of the best chess books you can afford. Study these books as a seperate part of your 'self lesson' plan, apart from the study program using the computer. Then, play as much competitive chess (and more against humans),as you can, even if its only 5 minute chess on the ICC. This will help develop various aspects of your game. Especially important is to take any games apart, that you have lost for various reasons. If you have selected a particular opening, and you have got badly beaten on the side that you chose to be yours, then play this same opening for the other color to get a better grasp of how to play it. BTW, not just having a trainer or chess coach is good, but also if you can form a study group of other strong player's (to team with), then that will be useful to improving your game too. Anyway, below are some good stuff to have, if you are an aspiring chess grandmaster. 1. Lots of money, so that you don't have to worry about entry fee's and traveling expenses. Also, because you have the money, it will give you the next extremely important component - Time. You'll need as much free time as possible to study in depth. There just is never enough of it. 2. Youth - so that there is plenty of time for further gains, and so that you can get on some top 20 list right away. Also, the tight knit chess world only respects young talents anyway. Its clearly too late for me. Even if I won some games against good player's, I'd problely be accused of having a Fritz in my eyeglasses, before anybody would acknoledge me for the result:) 3. Supportive family life, so that this decision you have taken will not be sidetracked by parents for example, who think you would make more out of your life as a Doctor, (Kamsky!?) or worse yet, Factory worker. (me, for many of my wasted years(-: ). Unfortunately, Almost none of us have these essential ingredients:) In my next life I will choose to be a comedian or actor instead; the money is better (if your successful), and often (always?), the life style too. Oh yeah, and you generally dress more stylishly too:) mrslug - the inkompetent chess software addict!
