It's pretty easy to sniff plain text for credit card numbers. With regards to the gas station, the ones in North America have security cameras in them that focus on the till and surrounding area, so the attendant would have to go to some trouble to successfully smuggle card numbers without being caught. But you're right in general: we've learned to accept the small inherent risk in this situation. Internet commerce isn't accepted in the same way, yet. Frankly, I think the databases of companies like ICD and GambitSoft aren't that likely to be hacked for the purposes of client data collection as the databases of some other companies I can name (eBay, anyone?) But because cracking is often done just for the fun of it, anything can happen. Dave
