When you say 34 moves you are quoting the figure that Reuben Fine gives in "Basic Chess Engines". That's a great book, but there are numerous errors in it, and this figure is one of them. The actual maximum distance to mate is 33. I don't believe that there ever was a FIDE "double maximum distance" rule. bruce
