Subject: No King program

Hello,
I sometimes use a computer program fore chesstraining with young children.
sometimes you want to remove all the pieces that are not related to the training
subject. That includes sometimes the white and black king to. Is it possible to
program a computer engine to work with pieces without kings on the bord. Is it
just a routine you have to left out to program this ore is the algorythme of the
kings so essential that it is not possible to work this out.
