Although this may not apply to use,
ExaChess Lite is an excellent chess database that is free.
It is however for the Mac.

On the Gambitsoft site (www.gambitsoft.com) there is a list of free data base
programs, some of which are reported as very good.  I think that at least one
can use Crafty as an engine.  That provodes a great engine and data base for
free.
