Go to system monitor in the Win95/98 system tools section and choose Kernel Processor Usage and File System: Bytes read per second. You should be using less than 5% of resources in the quiescent Windows state. Hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and a screen will come up telling you what drivers are running. Recently, I had a problem with a Hewlett-Packard printer desktop driver "Hppropty" which is a desktop monitor driver and not necessary to the usage of the printer. I renamed it to Hpproptya and now my system runs well. You can selectively experiment with which drivers are gumming up the works by deleting the specific drivers one at a time and observing which one is over-tasking your system. In my case Hppropty was using up to 30% of my resources every 16 seconds while it read the hard disk. This precluded my ability to defragment the disk and to use other scanning devices. It also badly interfered with all graphics devices including chess and checker games. I still don't know what I did in the first place to get the problem. At least I knew how to fix it.
