There's also the question of fairness on the other end. Personally, until confronted with evidence otherwise, I find it easier to just believe everyone is behaving honestly. (Of course, I always make sure that I get correct change when shopping...) Also, I think a GM trying to consult any opening notes, databases, playing programs (for tactical double checking), astrologers and what have you will become distracted and lose the thread of the position. I think concentrating on the position before him (or her) and using his skill and talent will stand any good GM in better stead than looking for a cheap win with other aides. And if the GM isn't that good (due to age, lack of practice or what have you), I don't think he'd stand a chance anyway. >I am not sure a match played under such conditions really has any validity.
