I have been testing crafty for some time against various versions.
It had become clear to me for awhile now that v16.6 was much superior
from bullet to 3 hour matches over 16.5 and 16.4. There has been debate
for a long while as to which version is the strongest. Some who play
crafty on ICC and FICS have expressed the view that 15.20 was still
the strongest version. My tests on a k-6 350 w/1 meg ram indicate that
it depends on what time frame you use as to which is indeed the strongest.
Bullet are the most difficult games to analyze the data as 15.20 lost
11 games on time(in a 50 game match), many of which where draw games.
There seemed to be a time usage problem with 15.20 particularly in the
1 0 games. 15.20 was always behind on time in the bullet matches but did
not seem to be a problem at all once the matches moved to 3 0 and beyond
no more losses on time. I will simply present the data and you can draw your own
conclusions on the matches. I unfortunately am not currently using
tablebase....hope to upgrade to larger hardrive when the k7's come out.
I used Dan Corbits MSVC compiled versions for both 16.6 and 15.20. They run
considerably faster on my computer.

I haven't had a chance to examine all the data as am currently
running 40/2 and have been using notepad to look at the scores.
Apologies in advance for any inadvertant errors......testing is
very time consuming and difficult to be sure that the data is
solid and not corrupt.
* lost one game on time in which it appears to have locked up after only 22
moves
** lost 11 games on time many of which should have been drawn
