While we all talk about the relative strength of all of the computer chess programs, we could very well put them to the test ourselves. Probably everyone who enters this club has a computer and a chess playing program. I would like to see us start an email tournament where all the players are computers. Everyone could play, and I think it would be as fair a test as we could come up with, although we would still have to account for hardware differences. But we could play tons of games in a couple of months, and all of the moves could be posted on the web. We could easily then rate the programs in a place they have yet to be compared, very long time controls. This could be very interesting to watch unfold, and we might change the world's opinion on which is the best program. Of course, some programs have copyright sticklers, we'd have to clear that, but SSDF did. People would pay as much attention to our results as they do to SSDF's if we organized everything equally. What do you think? You could test your own program in action. Chuck
