The problem comes when you realise that the machines still have a big effect on who gets the prize money. Imagine that two players come down to the final round tied. One has signed the "No computers" list the other has not. So one guy gets Fritz/Junior/Hiarcs on a Quad Xeon or something like that and the other guy gets an IM because he was smart enough to "NOPlay" computers. But even this is not necessary. Computers would knock out contenders in early rounds too. It does not matter that they cannot share the money. They do determine who does get it. As far as I know nobody has ever been "Forced" to play a computer in a USCF rated event. And as evidence to the facts just look at "Chess Life" magazine. Every tournament is N/C (No Computers). So ask all those tournament directors why they put the N/C in the announcements. Jim Walker
