If you search the dejanews archive/rgcc for Zobrist hashing you will find the method that I and I believe most others use for the actual hashing function. Is your last question just restating the previous one? Or do you talking about verifying the hash key ie determining collisions? That is a subject in itself! Some people just ignore them and if you have a largish hash table guaranteed this may not be too bad (?). I always have a minium of 256M hash table so don't worry too much about collisions.
