I don't think you can break it down knowledge vs speed. I have played both
Hiarcs7 (knowledge based) and Fritz 5.32 (fast searcher). Both are very strong
at blitz and are 1 & 2 at blitz chess in my testing. Hiarcs7 was able to edge
out Fritz 5 at blitz chess in my testing by only 20 points in about 100 games
played each vs other players on fics, computer and human. Neither program lost
to any human player, and Hiarcs7 got the edge by playing slightly better against
other computer programs like crafty.
