This is a consequence of: the ratings system, players carefully choosing their opponents (mostly for ratings), and probably some other factors. I think FICS ratings are much more in-line with reality, mostly because of the ratings system being used (It's the Glicko system - a complicated mathematical formula to calculate rating-differentials, on which ratings changes are based after each game. On FICS you can type 'help glicko' to get the formula and explanations.) Jeremiah
