One of the reasons they are inflated and highly volatile is that ICC uses K=32
for all players.  The USCF uses K=32 up to 2099,K=24 for 2100-2399 and K=16 for
2400 and above.  This means that the higher rated players ratings vary less.
When playing with K=32 you can get on a hot streak and raise your rating 100-200
points in one night.  But still consider that Blitz is a "Special" case of
chess.  It is a practiced art.  It is a skill not natural to all people
including GM's.  The ones that practice/play blitz (a hundred games/day is not
unusual) will destroy the people that "Drop In" to try a friendly game of blitz.
 The other reasons mentioned below are all valid also.
