There is no need to change the *system*, in order to give the moderators less freedom to deal with situations. What is needed is for the moderators to behave in sensible fashion. I'll give you an example. You have a judge, sitting in a court. The judge handles a series of cases and acts reasonably. There is no problem here. The judge can exercise discretion when making rulings and when passing sentence. Justice is served fairly well. If you are overly worried about judges misbehaving, you can attempt to control their behavior by passing strict laws and mandating sentences. This prevents judges from doing what you don't want them to do, but the cost is that the judge can no longer bend the rules in order to better dispense justice. You don't want to have to do this, what you want is for the judges to behave properly in the first place. Sometimes people propose systems here that are extremely rigid. For instance, first three rude comments get a warning, fourth one gets a one-day suspension, fifth one gets you a week out, sixth one gets you two weeks, etc. You may as well write a program to be a moderator in this case. Even with the problems we have had recently, and even with the problems we have had as long as we have had moderators (myself included), I still think it makes more sense to have human moderators who are given discretion to behave in a fashion that some of us might disagree with, but which we all mostly agree has some structure, makes some sense, and which we can live with without getting too upset. bruce bruce
