The G3/466 should be about 17% faster than the P550. See details below. > Mac advertising insists that the Mac is faster at a given Mhz level > than is a Pentium. The ads certainly do, but the speed difference is a strong function of application. My (extensive) testing indicates a G3 runs HIARCS 7.0 about 38% faster than a Pentium II at the same clock rate. As closely as I can figure, the G3/466 CPUs on sale now are the equivalent of a P645 for the purposes of HIARCS 7.0. This is based on timing of HIARCS 7.0 on 32 of the LCTII problems at 4.5 minutes/move for various G3s (233, 300, 350, 400 MHz) and a Pentium II/400. Note (table below) that the data I have indicates that HIARCS speed scales with MHz for the G3. G3/466 upgrade boards are for sale now. (If anyone has HIARCS 7 and a G3/466, P500/P550 or a K6/450, and is willing to run my benchmark (takes 2.5 hours, unattended), I'd love to collect more data.)
