Another major condition I forgot to mention: If there are 16 pieces/pawns for one color found so far, than all color bits can be dropped for pieces/pawns of the other color remaining in the structure. This is an important savings since a LOT of positions before captures have white pieces on ranks 1 through 6 and black pieces on ranks 3 through 8. This saves as much as 15 bits for the black pieces (e.g. in the opening). This is a HUGE savings which virtually validates this schema for real positions. KarinsDad :)
