If you are the technical sort, I suggest you might like to try the following combination just for fun: Crafty 16.6 + E.N. Tablebase + Winboard 4.0.2 + CDB. It is free, looks nice, plays great chess, allows you to connect to the internet, and displays database entries in a very interesting way. Someone ought to compose a poem in the honor of Hyatt, Nalimov, Mann, and Klausler. ;-) For commercial chess playing programs, I like Rebel and Hiarcs. Both have DOS interfaces which some people find annoying. CM6000 is incredibly cheap and plays excellent chess.
