Typical marketing stuff. I have seen similar at each and every commercial site.
One program "probably would have been world champion were it not for a late
discovered bug."
The world's best chess program is probably Deep Blue. Anyone who claims to be
the best in the world at computer chess in any category is missing a footnote or
two.
So, imagine the following caveats:
'Our program is the best in the world[1] at computer chess, for time control
<foo>[2]. Our program is the smartest in the world[3] for all that we know
of[4].'
[1] Among programs for which we have source code available -- namely ours.
[2] Of those programs which we tested -- namely ours against Gnuchess
[3] For those which we know how they work -- and we think we have a pretty good
handle on how ours work.
[4] {cough}
Each and every program seems to be world champion -- at least in some imagined
category.
FWIW: Hiarcs seems to be a truly excellent program, with many capabilities that
other programs lack. I don't really read marketing hype {or at least, I don't
take it seriously}, since that's usually what it is. In any event, I doubt if
the Hiarcs hype is worse than the hype of any other commercial chess entry.
Actually, sometimes you read something pretty funny.
