Two other servers were mentioned in this thread so far: chess.net and ICC. ICC does not meet your criteria of being free. IMHO it's not worth the money anyway, but that's another can of worms that I won't open here :) Chess.net, while a fine server, is in essence what FICS was a year or two ago in terms of features and players. Other servers aren't worth spending as much time with. Web-based sites (usually java) are decent for beginners but generally very poor for all others.
