I would suggest FICS (Free Internet Chess Server). Their address is
www.freechess.org. They offer more players than any non web-based free chess
server, and a rich array of chess related features that exceeds all other free
chess servers.

Two other servers were mentioned in this thread so far: chess.net and ICC. ICC
does not meet your criteria of being free. IMHO it's not worth the money anyway,
but that's another can of worms that I won't open here :) Chess.net, while a
fine server, is in essence what FICS was a year or two ago in terms of features
and players.

Other servers aren't worth spending as much time with. Web-based sites (usually
java) are decent for beginners but generally very poor for all others. You can
easily play chess at them with another beginner, but you can't do much else
related to chess.
