It appears that Microsoft fixed some serious optimization bugs in VC++ 6.0. Using Makefile.nt and SP3 for VC++ 6.0, use /Ox /G6 /Gr instead of /O2 /G6 /Gr /Ob2 when building your code. The difference is 198,147 to 189,966 on some old dual p6/200. I am using individual object code generation (each .C file has its own .OBJ file) and no /DFAST. This might additionally speed up things.
