I don't think boldness had anything to do with it. I'm sure any player offered that prize money would have taken up the challenge, but IBM wanted to pit DB against the best human player. Challenging anyone else would have been pointless. I'm hoping that the enormous interest in the Kasparov-Anand match will make IBM marketing suits greedy enough to roll out DB again. :) Kasparov-DB3 would probably be the only match-up that would evoke more interest than Kasparov-Anand. DB would also be Kasparov's most difficult opponent psychologically. He can take his watch off and put it back on as many times as he wants, but DB is unfazed by unsportsmanlike conduct. :) By now IBM could easily build a machine 100 times as fast, and Kasparov would inevitably crack under the mental strain of a long match against an even stronger DB. Or maybe not. But it would be a great match to see.
