Subject: Nominees... My Take on the Free Email Issue...

I understand the sense of frustration that pseudonyms create, but
there are certain facts that we should not overlook:

    1) Aside from the 2 children that posted a series of
epithets and were never heard from again, only 4 people, to
the best of my recollection, have ever lost their CCC password
privilege. All four had "legitimate" email addresses and were
posting under their real names.

    2) Probably one of our most "famous" members was someone who
posted under a pseudonym - Komputer Korner, and perhaps some of
our most "infamous" members posted under their real names.

    3) I have not counted, but I would guess that we have over
1000 (about 15% of our total count) free email accounts listed as
CCC members. Despite this fact, the CCC runs without incident over
99% of the time.

    4) We can close out all of the Hotmail and Yahoo accounts and
spend the rest of our time tracking down the thousands (and growing)
number of new freemail companies, but if someone wants to get a password
bad enough, he just needs to stay one step ahead of the curve.

At the sake of boring everyone to death... I draw an analogy to my
teaching days. When I first began to teach back in 1968, all the men
teachers wore ties and jackets. Some were respected by the students,
some were not. About two years into teaching I decided that I was
just not a tie and jacket fellow. I dared one day to show up without
a tie. There was no difference in the respect that I received. A
short time later I showed up without a jacket... again no change in the
students. When other teachers followed, I noticed the same phenomenon:
the teachers that had the student's respect in the ties and jacket
days still did, and the ones that did not, were still abused.

Moral of the story... what you wear (including names and email addresses)
is not as important as who you are and what you say (and your
sincerity in saying it).
