Underpromotion is a rule which is ALLOWED in chess, but not required. If a program declines to take advantage of this rule, I suppose that "decision" could cause it to lose or draw a game which it might otherwise win; but it is still playing "chess" as long as the move it does make is also legal according to the rules of chess. It just didn't make the best move in this hypothetical situation. It was apparently the judgement of the programmer that Junior 5 would not suffer much by ignoring this strategy as an option. Or am I missing something? Are there situations where underpromotion is the only legal move; and if so, does Junior do something illegal? ...Milton Zucker...
