I think on your list of benefits to society you left out
the single most important one, the silicon chip.
Back in the 60's the cold war led to the 'space race'.
They needed something to replace the old 'valves' as we
called them. It had to be maintenance free, not affected by
too much heat, vibration and be small to fit in a space capsule.
The answer, the integrated circuit. We have the 'space race',and
indirectly,I suppose, the communist threat, to thank for our
lifestyles today.
