For a virus to infect your system, you must pass it control of the operating system. You should never ever open an .exe or .com attachment without doing a virus scan. Text files will not affect your system if you disable macros. Impossible. The text file could even contain the code for the virus, but if you never pass it control of the operating system, it is benign. On the same note, .bmp files and .wav files are okay.
