I didn't like 21... g6, but also 17... e4 gave white a handy target, and it ended up costing black the a pawn to avoid losing this pawn. When watching the game, I decided that maybe black was concerned with the white knight plonking down on f5, maybe... And g6 prevented that, but opened another can of worms...
