Exactly right! If the computer goes out of it's opening book in the middle of a gambit, it's a big problem. Although tedious hand tweaking is always needed to some degree, it's great if the program will "learn" what openings are winners, and choose them. I believe Crafty does this. If you want to see how Galahad does this, go to: http://home.fda.net/~wzrdking/index.html and click on the chess programming link. James has an interesting way for his program to go back through the first 20 moves of each played game, and note whether that opening was favorable or not. After lots of games on the chess servers, he's undoubtedly got a better opening book for his program. (He states that the openings he got from the Pittsburg archive had errors in it.)
