I only point back to hong kong in 1995 as an example where Deep Thought lost to Fritz 2 moves out of book. Or crafty, which is not a terribly weak program as everyone has seen, yet at the 1997 WMCCC event it did really badly. It just happens, and even the best will have a blow-out tournament from time to time... and it doesn't mean they are playing 1400 chess when it happens. There is much more 'luck' in the game than anyone wants to admit. And when luck is involved, some of it _has_ to be bad...
