Subject: WCCC Report, After Round 6

Well, LambChop had a win today so I'm in a good mood and have energy to write
something about WCCC9. There were, as usual, plenty of exciting games today.

Ferret played the Evans Gambit vs Shredder and had plenty of pressure that
netted a pawn. A complex rook ending was entered, and the noise from Bruces
hard drives accessing tablebases could be heard by spectators for several hours.
In the end it was drawn, I haven't had a decent look at it but clearly there
were winning chances.

Junior crunched up Nimzo, I heard there was a nice sac. with Nf6. This result
was expected by me, I've seen Junior score heavily against Nimzo on ICC.

Today Chop played the German amateur program SOS. After being out of book at
move 3 (!), Chop played an unconventional opening that went badly astray after
move 8 or 9. Chop thought it was losing a piece, but in the end it only lost a
pawn (I'm pretty sure it could have been much worse). A long struggle started
with Chop hanging on for grim death, but at the same time sneaking forward with
its passed C-pawn. Amazingly, white finally went wrong and Chop liquidated into
a won ending with RP vs BPPP. I'm still getting my head around how we actually
managed to win this game, for several hours I was thinking that there was only a
slight chance of salvaging even a draw.

Yesterday, Chop had a loss to CilkChess. It was a decent game, but the tactical
power of CilkChess proved to be too much on this occasion. Chop played the
weakening b4 in the opening, which CilkChess exploited well to win a pawn. Chop
got some activity in return but it wasn't enough. It was nice to get a free
CilkChess t-shirt though :-)

Draw vs DarkThought the round before that, Chop was better then took a hot pawn
and allowed a perpetual.

Tomorrow, its Zugswang for the final game so I get to play all 3 big iron
programs.

Getting kicked out of tourny hall now.

Peter
