Chessbase sponsored a prize for the highest finishing "hobby" program at the WCCC. There was a list of programs that were eligible for this prize, some of you may have noticed that my program was on the list, but was not awarded the prize, even though it was the highest finishing program on the list. I want to make absolutely certain that people know why this is. I had myself removed from the list because I don't regard that my level of involvement in computer chess could be considered to be in the "hobby" category. I think that a hobby programmer is someone who works on their program after work, but I am someone who works on mine instead of work. I would have felt wrong to take that award given these circumstances. This decision was even easier given that the highest finishing program that remains on that list was LambChop. Anyone can see that LambChop is clearly a hobby program, it had a great tournament, and seems to be improving rapidly. I hope that receiving this award will provide encouragement to Peter McKenzie to continue working on it. Thanks, bruce
