Well, I favor the fast programs, just my personality type I guess.  :)
However, knowledge is in many forms, including Opening book, learning,
tablebases, ...

My opinion is that a well written fast (little knowledge in the evaluation)
program or a well written slow (lots of knowledge in the evaluation) can
be equally good players and both benefit from the speed increase and use
of the above described knowledge.
