No programming knowledge or experience is necessary to understand it. In fact, it is mostly a story of the development of computer chess. There is also enough practical information there to get you started on designing your own program. Of course, having programming experience would be helpful when reading the book because you could more easily see how to turn the ideas into algorithms. However, you can get a lot out of it without any programming knowledge. - Dan
