There are a couple of good books that will show you some basics of a chess
program, Computer Chess & Computer Chess II by David E. Welsh and Boris
Baczynskyj. However they were printed in the mid 1980's and are out of print
now. If your lucky it might be possible to find them in a used book store. I
have both of them and they are excellent books, I have read them cover to cover
many times. They include many computer chess tournaments from that time too. I
really enjoy playing over the games from Cray Blitz, Belle and Nuchess.
