CSTAL II has auto configurable has tables for main, pawn, and endgame. I have played around setting them myself when I was short of memory I would up the main and lower the pawn and it did seem to play a little better. Only a programmer like Robert Hyatt or Ed Schroder can answer your question. You could contact Oxford Softworks and asked them why they did it for CSTAL. Dave
