I am surprised by these results, too, particularly in view of some of the other
results I've seen. Fritz beats Polgar 4-1, with 3 draws in g/30, the five top
Paderborn programs holding their own against five strong GM's at 40/2,
the ancient old W-Chess on a P90 scoring 4-0, with 2 draws against 6 GM's or
IM's
at the Harvard Cup about 6 or 7 years ago and numerous other events where
the computers were at least competitive against GM's or IM's had me thinking
that the top programs were approaching GM strength. These two games are
impossible to ignore.
Of course, it is only 2 games but the manner of Hiarcs' losses is remarkable.
If Richard 2265 continues to beat Hiarcs like a drum, I have a question.
Is it just that this particular human has a special talent for playing against
computers? Or is it possible that HIarcs 6, although it topped the SSDF list
not that long ago(I think), is more susceptible to human anti-computer play
than Fritz or Shredder or W-Chess or some of the other programs that have
some respectable results against strong human players? Or would Richard 2265
be doing the same thing to any program he was playing?
I suspect that some programs that cannot outscore Hiarcs in computer v computer
games may outperform Hiarcs against humans. Comments?
