Computers have one major weakness... they cannot adapt! Yes programmers can make changes, but good changes in playing style take a lot of time and there simply wouldn't be time for that kind of adaptation on a three year tournament tour. The GMs would learn what the weaknesses of the computers were and that would be it. Only the GMs who were unprepared or who made careless errors would lose to the programs. Every program has weaknesses - it might take the GMs a little time to find them, especially if the weaknesses are well hidden, but once the GMs have found the weaknesses the contest would be over. Humans can adapt, communicate with each other, and prepare for the programs. The programs cannot do this. It is a little like computer security.... You can design the best computer security system in the world, but once one person finds a hole, anyone who is told what the hole is can get in. Chess "holes" are more difficult to exploit, but I think that most GMs, once they know about a program's holes, can effectively exploit them. - Dan
