Thanks to both Bob and Eugene for excellent technical suggestions. Bob's course is of course ideal: get a 10 gig HD and use it for tablebases.In the interim, I have used Eugene's suggestion and it works perfectly: now the tablebase initialization searches the HD folder (containing only one tablebase file); it takes 1 second, instead of 30 seconds. In the rare case when I really want to use the tablebases, I will go in to *.ini and change the path to the CD (until I install another HD.)
