I think the Pentium series as well as the AMD series are better for chess
programs due to the 100 mhz FSB (front side bus) that comes with those chips.
A celeron currently is limited at 66 mhz (without overclocking). I have not read
anywhere that the Celeron is better than a PII or PIII or even an AMD at equal
clock speeds.

The Celeron can however produce performance results pretty close to the above
named chips and in most cases is considerably cheaper.
