Tactics is the answer for intermediate players...I like to get a book of combinations and put them in chessbase then study these combinations. The idea is to learn pattern recognition by studying a large amount of different positions. So after a reasonable amount of analysis one should look up the answer if he can't figure it out then proceed to the next position. A good chess program set so that the human only wins one out of 3 or 4 times is also good and I find that I do better if I save each game to a good database then go over the game with an analysis engine to review what I did right and what went wrong.
