Speaking for myself I can say that the difference between my Laptop Intel MMX166
and AMD K6-200 for ALL chess programs is 50% except for CSTal2. CSTal2 runs on
the AMD  3x (!) faster than on MMX166.

Because all others benefit only 50% I wouldn't call it a cache issue.
