It's worth it to me because there is just so much activity there.  I never have
trouble getting a game with a strong human opponent, no matter when I sign on.
If you want to observe GMs and IMs playing, this is also the place to go, but
you probably won't get many games against them yourself unless you earn a high
rating first.

You may also want to try FICS, at http://freechess.org/ which seems to have less
activity, but is completely free.  One suggestion if you haven't played Internet
chess before.  Try playing free on FICS for a couple of weeks, just to get the
feel of it.  Then sign up for one of the ICC 7 day free trial memberships.  If
you think that ICC is better ( I do, but you may not ) you can send in your
membership fee at the end of the trial period.

There are plenty of other places to play on the Internet.  For some links, go to
http://www.internetchess.com/ and click on the "playing on the Internet" link.
