Does anyone have any ideas on how to use computers to objectively assess the strength of human GM's based on the games of past tournaments? I ask because I simply cannot believe that current FIDE ELO ratings are in any way comparable to ratings in the 70's (when the system was adopted by FIDE) or those back-calculated by Dr. Elo for previous eras. To take one example, Victor Korchnoi has a higher FIDE rating today than he had in the 70s when he was the perennial World Championship challenger, and higher than back-calculated for him into the late 60s when based on tournament results and his own subjective assessment his career peaked. This seems like a good area of research where the computer community could offer a genuine contribution to the professional GM community. Sine cera, -Kristo.
