Chinese chess is in fact very close to chess, and i am sure you can pick it up very easily. I know a lot of chinese chess players who learn how to play chess and become a reasonable good player in very short of time. And one of my co-worker at my office here, who is a good chess player, told me that he actually beat his chinese chess teacher in his first game! :) It is pity that such popular game (estimated over 200 million people in China along know how to play it) is largely unknown for most westners. It is bad because most materials about it are in Chinese. One of my friends is working on a online english tutorial, and I hope it will help the people who want to learn this game when it done.
