For example, an endgame might be played out with three conversions: Starting with KRPkr. The pawn eventually queens (into KQRkr) but is immediately captured by the rook (into KRkr) But since the Queen was guarded by the rook, RxR (into KRk) And then white goes on to mate. The distance to conversion is the maximum time needed to force the next simpler stage.
