Thank you to those who answered.  I will try to locate xwpe and Kdevelop.  And
read about emacs.

It was not my intention to defend or criticise either W98 or Linux.  I have been
messing on and off (mostly off, as in put-off) with Linux for about a year.
Being used to just clicking things in a Windows environment and being guided
through difficult tasks (those that require any understanding at all) by
wizards, Linux is something of a culture shock.  Of course the price of
ignorance is dependency.  From my perspective, Linux is getting better now that
GUI front ends are being developed (Kde), installation is more automatic and
there is an element of plug and play.   All these seem to me positive features
of any desktop OS.  They will hopefully make Linux much more popular to the
non-technical person and thereby substantially increase the user base - with all
that will then follow.

What do those of you programming under Linux (Bob Hyatt?) actually use now?
