What you are describing here is the Chess Analysis Project. See this URL: ftp://38.168.214.175/pub/Chess%20Analysis%20Project%20FAQ.htm >I guess that sounds more feasible -- any kind offers? It is quite feasible. We have over 100 machines in operation with 650K+ EPD positions analyzed at long time control. So far, we have: Project ECO: An analysis of the Encyclopedia of Chess Openings. Completed Project OrAnG UtAn: An analysis of a couple thousand 1. b4 games. Completed. Project Apocalypse: An analysis of 7000 EPD test positions. Completed. Project Heartwood: An analysis of the most popular moves, by order of frequency of occurrence. Moves played at least 200 times: completed. Moves played at least 100 times: completed. Moves played at least 50 times: completed. Project Stonewall: An analysis of about 2000 stonewall opening games. Completed. Project Connect The Dots: Programming in progress. Project Brainy-SOC: Code complete, in Alpha stage. Project NOSE: Requires Brainy-SOC, no progress. Project Ghost Games -- the road not travelled: Completed phase 0 -- analysis for ECO positions where computer suggests a move that was never tried by the experts. Project Whirlwind: Tens of millions of positions have been analyzed at two seconds of PII 300MHz time per position. BTW, the SAN toolkit will generate EPD from a large collection of PGN games. You must first strip out annotations and also remove non-ASCII characters from the game headers. For single games, you can use EPD2DIAG, which is much more forgiving about abnormalities within the PGN.
